for the college application process

Sophomore year:
Answer these questions:
What am I interested in? a particular sport (eg soccer)
if so which one _________________

and? _________________

A particular subject (eg. math)
if so which one _________________

and? _________________

A particular activity (eg. Student Council, band)

and? __________________

Do I want to go to a college far away? or in my own state/province?

To Do: Attend college nights to see what different college's offer

Junior year:
Start filling out a comparison sheet, research those colleges you might be interested in. Make sure that they offer what you might want to do.

Visit with college representatives at college nights. Introduce yourself. Ask them any questions you might have about their college or college in general.
Visit colleges. If you are unable to travel to colleges you are interested in then visit local colleges in which you may not be interested in order to get a feel for college campus', and your likes and dislikes. Examples:
North Texas- Denton, public large University of Texas at Dallas- Richardson, public small SMU- Dallas, private large University of Dallas- Irving, private small

Summer before Senior year:
Scholarships:
Go to public library, research scholarships
Go online and register with fastweb and financial aid homepage
By August have sent off for scholarship applications

Applications:
Send off for applications to the schools to which you would like to apply
brainstorm ideas for sample essays

August:

you should be receiving a few applications by the end of this month
Organize all applications by their deadline
Start filling them out first in pencil on copies, then typing on the originals
Register for standardized tests (ACT or SAT)

September:

Make an appointment with guidance counselor to review plan
Keep filling out rough copies of applications
Write first draft of essays

October:

Ask teachers for recommendations; give them the form
Begin typing applications
See English teacher about essays

November:

Remind teachers of date they need to finish recommendations (two weeks before deadlines)
Final essay drafts
Complete applications two weeks before December 1 deadline

December:

Review January deadlines
Complete applications for January
Schedule interviews when needed

January:

FAFSA forms available; complete and mail
Double check deadlines
All applications should be finished

February:

The long wait begins, learn patience
